Turning on our taps only to have nothing emerge isn't something that many of us think about. We're grown up with a never-ending supply of water; or so we thought. Drive through any Texas town and you'll see vast areas of dried lakes and reservoirs. Ask a resident of California what it's like to have a hose pipe ban. Water is not something to be taken for granted.
Conserving water is something that we can all do on an individual and household basis. If we don't start paying close attention to how we are using our water, we may soon find ourrelves in very limited supply. Here are ways that you can reduce your water consumption at home, at school and in the office:
1 Turn It Off
Turning your water off when you brush your teeth, shampoo your hair or even wash your hands can save hundreds of gallons of water per year if you have a family of four. Teach your children to turn the tap off when they aren't actually using the water.

2 Set a Timer
Taking a shower will consume less water than filling the tub for a bath. Put an egg timer next to the tub and set it for five minutes. Once you've gotten yourself down to a five minute shower with no problem, set it for two minutes. Taking a two minute shower will, again, save hundreds of gallons of water a year.
3 Wash Full Loads
There is no easier way to waste water than to wash half loads of dishes and clothes. Don't turn your washing machines on until you have a full load. Better still: purchase appliances that allow you to adjust the amount of water that you use. That way, if you have small loads or don't have a large family, you can use the appropriate amount of water.
4 Low Flow Heads
Install low flow taps and shower heads in the house. You won't notice a difference in water pressure but you will use less water!
5 Put a Brick in the Toilet
It doesn't make sense to replace your toilet when you can just put a brick in the tank. Doing so will reduce the amount of water it takes to fill your tank and thereby reduces the amount of water going down the drain when you flush. Don't have a brick? Fill two or three water bottles with water or sand and use them instead!
Conserving water on a personal basis is not only great for the environment but will ensure that we have water to use freely for decades to come. Using less water won't cost you a thing and takes very little effort. Start conserving today to ensure water availability tomorrow.
